Narodil se v Mnichově a začal hrát za tamní tým SC Mnichov06,. Učil se pojišťovacím agentem. Dokonce pracoval v pojišťovně ale v 17 letech odtamtud odešel a zahájil svoji kariéru profesionálního fotbalisty v Bayernu Mnichov. V 19-ti letech se dostal do Bundes ligy - a to na levém křídle. To ale nebyla pozice, na které se stal slavným po celém světě pod přezdívkou "Kaiser" čili "Císař". Proslavil se jako útočný stoper. Byl to úplně nový post. Do té doby obránci jen bránili a odkopávali míče, ale on ukázal že se z toho místa dá i zaútočit.
V září 1965 se dostal do německého národního týmu a hned následující rok si zahrál na mistrovství světa. Bayern brzy začal být silným klubem v německé lize, v sezóně 1966/67. V roce 1971 se stal kapitánem národního týmu, který následujícího roku vyhrál mistrovství Evropy. Dva roky potom se konal světový šampionát na půdě Západního Německa. Domácí tým se dostal až do finále, kde se střetnul s tehdy famózním Nizozemskem. Holanďané vedli již od první minuty gólem z penalty, ale domácí tým v čele s Císařem Franzem zápas otočil a vyhrál 2:1.
Beckenbauer slavil úspěchy i s Bayernem. V letech 1972-74 se jim podařil obdivuhodná věc - třikrát za sebou vyhráli Pohár mistrů evropských zemí (dnešní Liga mistrů). V roce 1976 se skvělý západoněmecký tým probojoval do finále mistrovství Evropy, kde ovšem podlehl na penalty Československu. V následujícím roce Beckenbauer přijal nabídku hrát v severní Americe hrát po boku Pelého za New York Cosmos, kde byl v letech 1977-80 a 1983-84. Za dobu jeho působení (do roku 1981) vyhrál tym třikrát americkou ligu. V letech 1980-82 hrál v Německém Hamburgu SV, kde se vrátil skončil v roce 1984 s kariérou hráče.
Brzy, ještě toho roku, se stal trenérem Západního Německa, se kterým se 1984 dostal do finále mistrovství světa a 1990 ho dokonce vyhráli. Zapsal se do historie světových šampionátů, když ho dokázal vyhrát jako hráč i trenér. V roce 1994 se stal prezidentem Bayernu Mnichov a 1998 zaujal pozici více prezidenta Německého fotbalového svazu. Byl se hlavním organizátorem mistrovství světa 2006 v Německu.
